How Many Chopped Snow Peas are in a Cup?

Pound of Snow Peas image

Sometimes it can seem frustrating to try a new recipe and not know how much of an ingredient to purchase at the store. Sometimes they give you a quantity of snow peas in volume (2 cups), and sometimes as a weight (12 ounces). So how much is in a cup of snow peas?

In order to figure out "how many snow peas are in a pound" we took a trip to the grocery store to check out the produce selection. Snow peas (also called Chinese pea pods) have very small peas inside, while sugar snap peas (also called snap peas) have slightly larger ones. We determined that 1 pound of snow peas contains about 72 whole pods and measures about 4 cups. So we used 1 pound of snow peas for our base experiment test sample.

Since most types of snow peas are normally eaten whole or in larger pieces (not minced or finely diced), when coarsely chopped, 4 cups of whole snow peas yielded about 3 ¾ cups of chopped snow peas. In addition we also found 1 cup contains about 18 to 20 snow peas

Did you know that botanically speaking, snow peas are a fruit but they are consumed today in the culinary world as a vegetable. Native to the Mediterranean region snow peas were a popular variety of pea in Europe in the nineteenth century.

How to Store Pound of Snow Peas

General How to Store Pea Info

If not using immediately, refrigerate all varieties of peas as quickly as possible to lessen the amount of sugar content that will turn into starch.

Short Term Snow Pea Storage

Unwashed edible-pod peas stored in the refrigerator in a perforated plastic bags or unsealed container will keep for 2 to 3 days.

Snow Pea Long Term Storage

Trim the ends of edible-pod peas before blanching for 2 to 3 minutes in boiling water. Immediately shock them in an ice-water bath until cool; this helps maintain their bright color. Drain and freeze them in airtight plastic bags. They will keep for 5 to 6 months.

Pea Side Notes

There are two common varieties of peas: green garden peas (need to be shelled) and edible-pod peas (eaten whole). Of the edible pod variety, snow peas and sugar snap peas are the most common; however, there are differences in the appearances between these two non-shelled types. Snap peas have crisp, plump edible pods, and snow peas, sometimes called Chinese pea pods, are flat edible pods.
