How Many Raspberries in a Pound?

Pound of Raspberries image

It can be frustrating to try a new recipe and not understand how much of an ingredient to purchase at the store. Sometimes they give you a quantity of raspberries in volume (2 cups) and sometimes as a weight (6 ounces). But how much are they really talking about? How many raspberries in a pound? In order to help make cooking easier we did some experiments to help tell you exactly how many raspberries you need to buy.

Like many other types of berries found at farmers markets and grocery stores, raspberries are normally served whole or chopped. Most of the fresh raspberries we see in the local market are the sweet ones. These are a tasty treat when you just pop them into your mouth raw! In addition they are great when baked into pies, preserves and other desserts.

To answer How many raspberries in a cup we went to the grocery store to check out the fruit section. After surveying the options we found that about 135 fresh red raspberries weighed 1 pound. We selected a 1 pound vented clamshell plastic container for our how many raspberries in a cup testing samples. The average measurement for our red raspberries was .6 inches long.

Raspberries are also commonly sold in 1 quart and 1 pint size plastic cartons. We discovered that 1 quart plastic box holds 3.5 to 4 cups and 1 pint about 1.75 to 2 cups of fresh red raspberries. Depending on the size of the berries, 1 cup will give you about 36 to 38 raspberries. A 1 pound vented plastic clamshell container will measure 4 cups of raspberries. To bake a red raspberry pie you will need about 1 pound of berries to produce this refreshing pastry.

Did you know that unlike many fruits, unripe raspberries do not ripen after they have been picked. Raspberries come in many different colors; you can even buy black raspberries. Not sure if you have a blackberry or a black raspberry? Regardless of the color, when picked the stem of the raspberry remains with the plant. This makes raspberries the most delicate berry because it leaves a hollow core. However, when a blackberry is removed from the plant the core remains in the center of the berry. Now you can tell the difference between a blackberry and a black raspberry!
